To Cholula!!

This one sounds as it looks this time, folks! :)

Anyway, also during this free weekend, my family took me to the nearby town of Cholula. It's a town famous for the number of churches it has (not 365, or one per day of the year, as many legends say, but still in the 70s or 80s).

The most famous of these churches is the one that sits on top of America's largest-based pyramid that used to be devoted to the snake god, Quetzocoatl (Ket-so-co-ott). My father and sister hiked with me up to the top, and the view was incredible!!!!

The ruins themselves of the surrounding archaeological areas were awesome, too.

It's so neat to see how Mexico incorporates such ancient places into modern everyday life. Right down the road was a lively market, and our view from above gave us an awesome look at a performance by the Voladores de Papantla. Essentially, a group of guys climbs up a pole with rope in tow. After a few minutes of winding and preparation, they soar down, ropes tied around their legs, spinning as the top of the pole rotates. It made me nervous to watch, but it was incredible!!
